Year 5

What did we do?

Y5 voted to plan and complete a sponsored “Energy Saving and Energy Giving Day”.

“ENERGY SAVING”

Our day got off to a very unusual start, with no lights or computers.  Registers were completed on laminated sheets and Mrs Jones struggled to see in the classroom for the majority of the day!

Children actually voiced that they really enjoyed the natural lowlighting and device-less day and said it created a much more calm, relaxed atmosphere.  On the other hand, we realised that we used a lot more paper throughout the day!  Details or ideas that we would normally record on the board needed to be completed on paper and texts that we would normally view from the class screen had to be printed out using more paper (the day before!)

We realised as a class that there were definite pros and cons to our day, but overall, children were eager to continue this way of learning on a regular basis.

“ENERGY GIVING”

For this part, Y5 were eager to plan and take part in a sports circuit.  Firstly, the children planned the activities that they wanted to complete.  They were very mindful that they chose a range of different activities, so that everyone could enjoy and access the event.

As a class, they completed a floor map of where their stations were going to be placed and also what sports equipment they needed in each station.  We had to be mindful of health and safety, spacings around each station and possible risks and measures for them.

We then decided on details for each activity, timings and group numbers – lots of Maths skills needed to ensure our time slot was adhered to and also to divide groups up as evenly as possible.  Children chose who to work with, so that they would be able to encourage each other more throughout it.

So many decision-making skills, as well as cooperative skills used!  We learnt a lot about compromising and ensuring that everyone had chance to access and enjoy our event.  When things got tough - we reminded each other of the reason we were working so hard - a very important charity!

Resilience and problem solving were at the forefront of our day and children showed these skills in abundance!
