Welcome to Year 1!

Welcome to Year One

 Mrs Ashman and Miss Preece

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back from a great summer break and into another exciting school year!

We would both like to extend to you and your child our warmest welcome into our classroom. We will both be teaching Year One this year and we are very excited about all we have planned.  Year One is a very busy year, filled with lots of fun and learning!

2018-19 topics

Autumn 1: Long, Long Ago

Autumn 2: Phase Project (Y1,Y2,Y3)

Spring 1: Turrets and Tiaras

Spring 2: Phase Project (Y1,Y2,Y3)

Summer 1:Shiver Me Timbers

Summer 2: Phase Project (Y1,Y2,Y3)

Throughout the topics the children will be encouraged to think creatively, applying their previous knowledge and experience, and suggest areas which they would like to find out more about.  It would help the children greatly if you encourage them by supporting them to research some of these areas.  For example, visits to the library, supervised use of the Internet and watching films and programmes on television together.  If you have any relevant resources at home, please feel free to send them in with your child for us to look at.

The children will be bringing home an individual reading book and record in the next few weeks. They will be listened to weekly during both Guided Reading sessions and individually and it is really important that they return their reading folder to school on the day allocated to them with a little comment or signature in the record to show that you have shared their book at home.

We are lucky at Casllwchwr to have the wonderful reading resource...  It is a valuable tool to help your children grow in confidence in their reading and is lots of fun too!  We allocate the children a set of e-books to consolidate their understanding of the ‘paper’ copies that will be sent home.  Please share these online books with your child and help them to answer the questions at the end of the text.  We are then able to see who has completed these and if they have experienced any difficulty in answering the questions.  If anyone is unsure of their child’s log in details, please let us know.

Spelling Challenge:

High Frequency Words will be the focus of our Spelling work this year and the children will have a weekly Spelling test on a Friday. We will be sending home more details of this in a few weeks along with ways in which you can help your child learn their words.

In a week or two we will send home your child’s homework book.  Please keep the book in the folder provided.  We will it send home on a Friday and it will need to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Website, twitter & Dojo:

Remember to check our class blog to see what we have been learning and our twitter feed to see pictures of the lovely things we do.  Our twitter account is @casllwchwr1 and we use the hash tag #cllpyear1.  If anyone needs a bit of help to set up a twitter account, pop in and we can help you out.  It’s very simple to use and so good for seeing what goes on in the classroom.  We try to tweet a few times a week.  We will also update our class story on Dojo regularly, so please do sign up to our class when you receive your invite.

Thank you for your support and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you want to discuss anything,

Kind regards,

Mrs S Ashman & Miss C Preece
