Welcome to Year 1!
A huge welcome back after a great summer break and into another fantastic school year.
We would like to give you a warm welcome to our Year 1 team and share with you some of the exciting topics we have planned for this school year. As well as our Year 1 and Year 2 topic we also teach topics across the phase.
Autumn 1: Sparks in the Dark (Y1&Y2)
Autumn 2: Phase Topic (Y1, Y2 & Y3)
Spring 1: Superheroes (Y1&Y2)
Spring 2: Phase Topic (Y1, Y2 & Y3)
Summer 1: Spots, Stripes and growls (Y1&Y2)
Summer 2: Phase Topic (Y1, Y2 & Y3)
During these topics the children will be taught discrete skills as well as the ability to think creatively, apply previous knowledge and experience and suggest areas which they would like to find more about. A great way in which you can support this is by encouraging and supporting them in researching or investigating into these areas. For example, visiting the library or supervising internet and watching programs about the topic.
The children will be bringing home an individual reading book and reading record at the start of the year. They will be listened to individually weekly on their allocated reading day as well as on a daily basis in Guided Reading sessions. It is really important that you help us in bringing the children's reading book and record in on the day allocated to them with a little comment and signature in the reading record to show you have listened to them read and shared the book at home.
We are lucky at Casllwchwr to have a new online reading scheme ‘Reading Eggs’ (https://readingeggs.co.uk/) to help the children grow in confidence in reading and is great fun too! On this tool the children will be able to access a huge range of books and reading material which is in addition to the paper books they will be bringing home. This resource will allocate log in information which we will provide for you once the tool has been set up for the pupils. This tool will become park of Year 1’s weekly homework.
Oracy Project- In the Autumn Term ‘Myself as a baby’. In the Summer Term ‘My favourite animal’.
PPA day: Thursday morning.
High Frequency Words will be the focus of our spelling work this year and the children will have a weekly spelling test on a Friday. We will be sending out more details of this in the coming weeks and ways which you can help and support your children learn their words.
In the coming weeks we will be beginning to send home weekly homework in a homework book. We will send the homework home on a Friday and will be collecting it back on the following Wednesday.
The children will take part in weekly PE sessions on a Tuesday this year and will be required to wear suitable footwear, joggers or sports bottoms and the Casllwchwr polo shirt or top. This clothing and footwear are essential for the children's safety when taking part in physical activity. We would like if the children can come to school dressed in their PE clothing for that day of week. A reminder that the children also take part in the daily mile every afternoon. We aim to do this every afternoon unless the weather prevents it.
Fruit & Drinks Bottles
As a school we provide fruit for the pupils. If your child would like a piece of fruit from the trolley it costs 30p a day or £1.50 for the week. However, if the children wish to bring in a piece of fruit, they are more than welcome to do that too. Also, at the end of the last academic year the children were all provided with a Casllwchwr water bottle. Could all children please bring their bottles into school to keep in class.

So please try and make sure you accept our invite if you haven’t already.
A huge thankyou for your support and please don’t hesitate to contact us of you want to discuss anything. We look forward to working with you as a team.
